Silver and Gold both reach new highs early Monday, as Friday’s solid showing in New York trickled down to Asian business market.

Gold saw some profit taking after reaching a record $1490.10 per troy ounce, brushed aside concerns that it is overextended, staying positive above the $43 level for the whole session.

Inflation matters remain the present driving force, even though several brokers now believe that silver, particularly, is largely dependent on technical momentum instead of anything more substantial.

“Silver is the metal of the moment, with no clear way of identifying why it should outperform in a generally-high performing environment,” Mitsui Global Precious Metals said in a report.

At 0540 GMT, spot silver was at $43.20, up 15 cents since Friday’s New York close, after hitting a record 31-year high of $43.37 earlier.

Spot gold was at $1,486.20/oz, down 20 cents; on Tocom, the February 2012 gold contract was at Y3,972 a gram, up Y10.

In an attack on US marketing firm Epsilon, millions of live e-mail addresses are deemed to have been stolen.

Epsilon handles customer communications for many household names and sends more than 40 billion e-mails annually. It has more than 2,500 clients including Best Buy, TiVo, Walgreens, Capital One, JP Morgan and Citigroup.

A lot of Epsilon clients have contacted customers warning that attackers may use the stolen data to con them out of more information.

A statement on their website says they have “detected an incident in which ‘clients’ customer data were exposed by an unauthorized entry into Epsilon’s e-mail system”.

It said the only information stolen was e-mail addresses and an associated customer name. No other personal identifiable information was exposed. It said it is conducting a full investigation into how its systems were penetrated.

Epsilon did not mention which customer lists for its many clients had been stolen.

However, many firms that use Epsilon contacted their customers to inform them about the data breach.

Barclays Bank, which runs Visa credit cards for US retailer LL Bean, warned customers that they may soon get spam seeking to elicit more personal information.

Best Buy, TiVo, Walgreens, Capital One, JP Morgan and Citigroup, Kroger and others all issued similar e-mail messages to customers.

“If anyone is using the services of the aforesaid banks, please be wary of the spam you might receive in the coming few days, ” says Tej Kohli.

Also exposed were e-mail addresses for the US College Board which handles communications for more than seven million students.

If WSJ is to be believed Google is joining hands with Citigroup and Mastercard to create a mobile payment system that will convert android phones into a sort of electronic wallet.

The technology, which is still at a nascent stage, will let users wave their Android phones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter to process payments.

The proposed payment method would allow Google to offer retailers more data about their customers and help them target advertisements and discount offers to mobile device users near their stores, said the WSJ, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Google is not expected to get a cut of the transaction fees, the paper said.

At the onset, holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards would be allowed to make payments for purchases by activating a mobile payment application developed for one current model and many coming models of Android phones.

“The situation at Japan’s earthquake stricken nuclear plant is getting worse, with radiation emissions reaching levels that led authorities to impermanently evacuate the last batch of technicians from the facility,” says Tej Kohli.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said that new efforts were underway late Wednesday to start injecting water into the damaged reactor from the ground.

National Television broadcast video of helicopters from Japan’s Defense forces being prepared to drop water on the plant no. 3 and 4, in a desperate attempt to bring the temperature down.

But the military had to abandon the plan when another surveillance helicopter measure excessive radiation levels above the plant.

Tej Kohli’s joke on how to handle a telemarketer:

1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. Ask, “How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?”

2. If they start out with, “How are you today?” say, “Why do you want to know?” Or you can say, “I’m so glad you asked, because no one seems
to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died . . .” When they try to get back to the sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems.

3. If the person says he’s Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, ask him to spell his name, then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long as necessary.

4. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: “Hi, my name is Judy and I’m with Canter and Siegel services….
You: “Hang on a second.” (few seconds pause) “Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are
you wearing?”

5. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, “Judy!! Is this really you? I can’t believe it! Judy, how have you
BEEN?” Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the heck she could know you from.

6. Say, “No,” over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they’re trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up.

7. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, “I don’t have any friends . . . would you be my friend?”

8. If they clean rugs: “Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood – chicken blood too?”

9. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional “Uh-huh, really, or, “That’s fascinating.” Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn’t give your credit card number to someone who’s a complete stranger.

10. Tell them you work for the same company they work for.
Example: Telemarketer: “This is Bill from Watertronics.”
You: “Watertronics!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?”
Telemarketer: “Uh, Dallas, Texas.” You: “Great, they have a group there too? How’s business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya.”

11. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers). If the person says, “Well, I don’t really want to get a call at home,” say, “Yeah! Now you know how I feel.” (smiling, of course…)
